AERATORS and DECANTERS

A Wine Aerator or a Decanter can be a great way to help ensure that you get the most out of a bottle of Wine. But whats the difference, which one should I choose?

Whether you use an Aerator or Decanter the result is the same The wine recieves more exposure to the surounding air which softens the tannins, enhances the Wine's aromas and overall characteristics. So it might come down to a question of time. A Wine Aerator speeds up the process of decanting a Wine. As the wine flows through the aerator, it “breathes” as bubbles are sent through it. An aerator is therefore more appropriate for casual meals, where time is of the essence, but quality of experience is important as well.

A decanter is often used with a funnel that aerates wine as it is poured into the decanter. The wine then rests in the decanter until you are ready to serve it. The Wine can stay in a decanter for hours without spoiling. Presenting Wine in an elegant decanter for guests may be a more special experience for company, than using an aerator.

A very old wine (10+ years) should not be aerated but the sediment must be removed. If you’re serving an old wine at its peak, it won’t benefit from aeration, as it’s fully developed. The more an old wine is exposed to air the sooner it will start to fade. Prior to serving the Wine it should be decanted to help remove the sediment.
