WINE CERTIFICATIONS

In order for a wine to be Certified USDA Organic Wine the grapes must be organically grown and the winemaking process must not use any sulphur dioxide, yeasts, bentonite, or eggs white gases such as N2, or CO2. Wine made from organically grown grapes which use these materials and ingredients are labled "made from organically grown grapes." Note that the wine making process is not certified organic.

For a Wine to certified and labeled "Biodynamic" it must meet stringent standards created by the Internationally recognized Demeter Association. The vineyard must be self-contained and self-sustaining. Growers must avoid the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, use compost and cover crops, and must reserve a minimum of 10% total acreage for biodiversity with the vineyards inspected annually. Many supporters of Biodynamic wines claim these wines present regional terroir more distinctly than conventionally grown wines.

Sustainability Certifications are state level certifications for the long-term sustainability of the wine community. It involves growing and winemaking practices that are sensitive to the environment, the needs and interests of the society, and economically feasible implementations and maintinance. These three principles are often referred to as the three "E's" of sustainability."
